Wine List
A big beautiful blend of Malbec (37%), Cabernet Sauvignon (24%), Merlot (27%), Petit Verdot (7%), Cabernet Franc (5%)
It took me 2 1/2 hours with one friend over filet steaks (they were stone cold at the end) to finish a bottle of this great wine...you can take more time just enjoying the nose than you do drinking it!
A blend of Malbec (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (25%), Merlot (25%)
A wine with a massive nose of spice, vanilla and chocolate. Superb fruit flavours and a brilliant structure
Drink now to 2019
A great rich Austrian red ... full bodied with rich fruit flavours, great with red meats & stews
Austrian reds are still a bit of a secret as the general wine drinking population hasn't cottoned on to them yet... they're amazing and great!
"Zum Beispiel" ... "For Instance" ... What a great name for a wine that introduces you to all the best of flavours from the best of the indiginous Austrian grapes. A fantastic blend of Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch & Pinot Noir
Smooth with balanced tannins ... big red fruit flavours ... ideal with lamb, red meats or even for a gentl sip on its own.
A great Blaufrankisch from the recently voted "best Red Wine maker" in Austria - Gesellmann!
This very well balanced red is full of rich cherry and dark fruit flavours all perfectly balancedwith the right amount of tannin. A delicious wine that goes perfectly with rich stews, red meats, cheeses or even on it's own, if you like a soft tannin finish.
January 2012... this has become an absolute favourite with our customers and we are sadly, temporarily out of stock!
I suggest you try the "ZB" which is Blaufankisch with Zweigelt and Pinot Noir... equally delicious but with softer tons and finish.
Oh my goodness.... What a wine! Made from pure Blaufrankisch, fermented and aged in oak.
This wine was voted the best Red Wine of Austria last year and Gesellmann has been voted the best Red Wine Producer of Austria this year!!! I can certainly see why!!!
After seducing you with a nose of soft fruit and oakey richness, huge soft morello cherry flavours oooze across your tongue and render you speechless (which is a good thing if you have a mouthful of wine!). The finish goes on into next week and you'll be left quivering in a state of winey nirvana!
A big and awesome blend of Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch and St Laurent, from the outstanding Gesellmann family. Garnet Ruby in colour with Cherries and Blackberries on the nose. On the palate you get the reward of all the big promised red fruit flavours, with hints of vanilla and liquorice. A long peppery finish awaits....
Not as well known as some areas in Bordeaux, Canon Fronsac offer great value ... Great chewy tannins give way to soft fruit flavours.
Drinking now to 2018
An easy drinking French Malbec ... Young and lightish in body, it opens up well given some time to breathe.
Chateau du Beaucastel is considered one of the great Chateauneuf-du-Papes!
Made by the Perrin family, it is cherished by lovers of this wine. Very ripe and dense flavours lead to a very long finish. It is drinking well now, but will improve with laying down (until 2024)
From our favoutite Rhone producer, Perrin, this big ruby beauty gives your a liquorice and cherry nose leadinginto very full bodied and concentrated tastes.
Drink now up to 2020
You don;t see this every day ... Sancerre rouge made from Pinot Noir!
Light with dried cherry flavours and a bit of a tangy tea-like finish
Gorgeous!!!
An awesome wine! The process of making Amerone, drying the grapes (appassimento) on straw mats (or more recently in special drying chambers) for up to four months concentrates the flavours and sugers from the grapes (predominently Corvina), creating a rich, full, and breathtaking wine that is perfect with meats, games and saucy flavourful meals.
Full of classic tobacco and vanilla notes with complex fruit flavours and silky tannins.
This is a very good entry level Barolo
The iconic Italian ... though these days minus the wicker casing around the bottle. Chianti's have come a long way in recent years and this example from Poggiotondo is bright and cheery with traditional cherry and dark fruit flavours.
Juicy, soft and easy tannins
A rich and elegant Montepulciano from the Colline Termane... a small canton in the Abruzzo. It was granted DOCG status in 1995 and unique to this one area, they can only blend up to 10% Sangiovese with the Montepulciano grapes.
It makes for a uniquely fantastic wine... A smokey, heady nose and rich fruit tones on the tongue with a fantastic finish
A classic wine adored by many wine enthusiasts. The Hochar family have produced in the Bekaa Valley since 1930. Their wines are made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Carignan, Grenache, and Mourvèdre in varying blends. They continued to produce throughout the civil war of the 70's and 80's and have established an almost cult-like following. They also produce the famous Hochar Pere & fils and have recently added the new line of younger less complex wines called "Musar Jeune".
It's often been said that if the flagship Chateau Musar was a bordeaux it would command many multiples of its price.
Deep Ruby colour with plums, tobacco, spice on the nose and palate and a very long memorable finish.
Pure silk and velvet! Coming from the southern tip of the north island where the folks there have been doing some really interesting things with this notoriously fickleand temprmental grape.
A lovely blend showing off the best of a Portugese red wine.
Syrah, Alicante Bouschet, Merlot, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Petit Verdot ... this wine has them all, creating a big, delicious spicy pleasure!
A terrific Pinotage from the Grier family in a country that does this grape best!
Spicy cinnamon and chocolate tones lead to a great lingering finish.
Alvaro Palacios has been instrumental in putting Priorat and wines from this region on the map. Starting around 25 years ago when he was 19, he began by finding old vines that needed some TLC and created fantastic blends. Some of his wines sell at amazingly high prices, but this is a great introduction to what he can do.
This blend is 50% Samsó ( Cariñena) 40% Garnacha, 5% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and it's a free spirit, with earthy meaty notes on the nose and big black fruit flavours on the palate.
Also look at another of his wines we carry ... "Les Terrasses"
Alvaro Palacios has put Priorat and wines from this region on the map. Starting around 1989, he sourced old vines in need of attention and started creating fantastic blends.
This is a "Super Spanish" blend of Carignena, Gamacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, and much of it from old vines. There's violet & nutmeg on the nose withtastes of coffee & chocolate. It's a very big wine with a long finish.
Also look at "Camins del Priorat"
This is from a project in Spain headed by the Malbrontes folks from Argentina.
It is a great wine at a great price! Rich flavours of mixed berry fruits with a hint of chocolate on the finish. It goes down very well here on Thursday & Friday nights when we serve Tapas...
This is a very interesting wine coming from vines 60-100 years old. Incredibly aromatic with an appealing gamey quality, this is a good solid wine from an up and coming region.
This "Reserva" from the folks at Castillo de Clavijo gets 18 months in oak and is fantastic value for such a big Rioja.
Ruby red colour and strawberries on the nose! Refined and elegant structure.
They also make a wicked good Pinot Gris (when we can get it in)
Randall Grahm who created Bonnydoon Vineyard is an eccentric yank who loves his wines and excessive verbosity!
However, this gentleman's passion for good wine has produced, among others, this outstanding Syrah (Shiraz by any other name) with a nose so BIG it creates it's own gravi9tational pull (says Mark).
Have a look at their website to learn more ... I can't do the man or his vineyard justice in this small space...
www.bonnydoonvinyard.com
To use their own words "This is a wonderfully nuanced, deeply fragrant Zinfandel". It harks back to the gentler Zins made in the middle of the last century in style, rather than the block busters that were being thrown at us in the past 20 years.
It's breathtakingly good ... read more on their really fun website www.frogsleap.com
49% Riesling, 29% Marsanne, 22% Sauvignon Blanc.
An aromatic, fresh and lively nose with hints of mango, pineapple and other tropical fruits. The palate is quite complex and the blend is unique but the addition of marsanne gives this a good weight whilst the riesling adds a refreshing tone.
The label is based on an eye test chart!
An unoaked white wine from Australia!
Light gold in colour, great bouquet of honey, candle wax and melon. Vibrant riope wine with layers of flavour. Robert Parker gave it 90 points.
Take everything you love about Gruner Veltliner and amplify it 100 times... Add a bigger minerality, more complex flavours and a longer finish and you'll understand why this GV set's itself above the standard.
It's a wine that grows and develops with every sip... amazing!
Patrick Puize is a young French Canadian who is making his mark in this famous region.
This is his second release and he is already receiving rave reviews from the critics.
A smokey nose with a rich full finish... lovely!
Veronique Gunther-Chereau's family have been making wine at Chateau de Coing since 1421! It is a family run estate and all the grapes used in this wine come from the 65 hectares under vine. The wine is aged for six month on it's lees which give extra richness and complexity to the wine.
The wine is pale lemon in colour with aromas of jasmine, pear and lightly toasted bread. The palate is juicy, with pure citrus fruit characted and a long fine textured finish.
Coming from vines almost 50 years old, this has an aromatic and floral nose with a subtle buttery flavour.
Drink now until 2018
Quincy was the first white appellation in France to be granted AOC status, in 1936. Jean Tatin who makes this wine was described by Decanter magazine in 2009 as a pioneer of the region who has reinvigorated Quincy.
100% Sauvignon Blanc this wine has a pleasing bright yellow colour and citrus and herby notes on the nose. The palate has refreshing fine acidity supported by flavours of lemon, peach and passionfruit. Long and lingering in the mouth, this is a wine that deserves more attention!
Produced from a single vineyard on the south side of the Solutre hill, the vines are up to 60 years old. St Veran was the second village in the Macon to be given AOC status, the first was Pouilly Fuisse.
Wonderful buttery, toasty flavours on the nose. In the mouth the wine has a rich, complex yet refined feel. Layer upon layer of wonderful fruit which lingers forever!
Granted AOC status in 2002, this is a great find. 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% unoaked Chardonnay which Sebastien feels adds body and complexity to this wine. Light lemon in colour with a lovely grassy redcurrant nose showing plenty of zingy Sauvignon aromas. On the palate it has oodles of Sauvignon character which is complimented by the buttery and richer Chardonnay.
Valencay is the only area to have AOC status for both it's wine and cheese!
A rare and interesting dry white wine from Japan. Often compared to muscadet, Koshu is very delicate and soft and a great wine with sushi & sashemi. There are more and more interesting wines coming Japan, however they can be expensive as this wine shows.
This is finding a following with people who want to bring something interesting along to a dinner party or want to serve a conversation starter with a very light course at adinner.
This is a fun SB from the Borham Wood folks. It has a distinctive Watford Hornets label and is a second production wine. However, unlike many novelty product (bad choccies from the seaside with a panoramic picture on the front)the wine is great especially at the price.
Last Christmas this was a firm favourite for Dad, brother or grandad presents. Unfortunately there is little stock left in the UK right now... we're trying to get more in, so please call for an update
This is a great example of a dry Riesling. Steely, minerally with a crisp taste and very ligering finish. Try it with salmon or trout... you're in for a treat!
An amazing wine coming from this part of old Blighty! Soft, yet crisp and balanced... Good fruit flavours and just off-dry.
A stunner from Simon & Natalie up at Frithsden near Berkhamsted. Visit their vineyard for a lovely day out!
A stunning Rose Sancerre from David Sautereau, a very happy, smiley, and friendly winemaker. His Sancerre blanc and Rouge are outstanding examples of what a Sancerre should be, and this rose defines the Rose catagory. Dry, and crisp, but with soft fruit tones but a great minerality which leads to a long and very satifying finish.
Gosset is the oldest wine house in Champagne. This blend of several vintages is an outstanding Non Vintage... Biscuity and Yeasty ... what a beauty!
Stunning port... a little drier than your average LBV with deep notes of Chocolate, vanilla and spice.
1977 is an 11/10 year for port. It is considered one of the best 4 vintages in the 20th century and Gould Campbell produced one of the best of the best that year. Drinking brilliantly now until 2020
From a private cellar, this is a port which is slightly lighter than many others yet full and rich. This port is at its peak and will be drinking very well for the next few years.
